To the editor:
The Crown of Maine Quilters are designing a special quilt that will commemorate Caribou’s 150 years. While much is known about the first settlers, the quilters wish to recognize the significant roles that women played in Caribou’s evolution. The Guild members are seeking the names of women from Caribou who were the first in their field. For example, they are looking for the first female physician in Caribou, the first female attorney, pharmacist, clergy, the first female postal employee, pilot, etc. Guild members have identified the first settler, teacher, Girl Scout Leader, Worldly Mason, race car driver and others.
If you are, or if you have a relative who was the first woman to accomplish a particularly significant contribution to Caribou’s development; the guild members would like to talk with you. Please call me at 492-0421 (drauch@maine.rr.com) or Sheila Belyea at 498-8682.
