Old Home Days kick off Friday in Sherman

   SHERMAN, Maine — A tradition that started more than 75 years ago continues this weekend as Sherman Old Home Days bring folks near and far back to their rural roots.
Sponsored by the Washburn Memorial Church, this year’s festivities begin Friday in the church vestry at 5 p.m. for a “Community Celebration.” The opening day ends with a dance in the Sherman Gym for grades 7-9 from 7 to 10 p.m.
The bandstand opens with famous bandstand hotdogs and other foods at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Ladies of all ages are invited for tea at the Red House from 2 to 4 p.m. The popular Sherman High Alumni Banquet, honoring the Classes of 1938, 1948 and 1958 begins at 5:30 p.m. in the gymnasium followed by music by John Birmingham and Friends from 7-10 p.m.
A breakfast in the Masonic Hall from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. gets Sunday off to a hearty start followed by a full day of activity and fun which includes co-ed softball, gospel music, home-baked goods, a lobster feed, car show, children’s parade, games, bike raffle, classic car parade, Little Miss Old Home Days pageant, chicken barbecue and variety show in the gymnasium starting at 7 p.m.
A special ceremony also takes place Sunday at the Washburn Memorial Church as the Clifton and Corinne Bragdon stained glass window is formally dedicated at 10 a.m.
Monday kicks off with coffee and Pumpkin Donuts at Cap Perrin’s place at 7:30 a.m. Other Monday events include more softball action, a 10 a.m. parade, beano and other games, a craft fair, dinner in the park, music, pet show, art contest, cupcake walk and finally a bean supper in the park at 4:30 p.m. followed by prize drawings.
The highlight of Monday activities will be a sky diving demonstration with Jump ‘n Raft at noon, weather permitting.
