MARS HILL – The Central Aroostook girls rallied in double overtime of their soccer match against Limestone on Monday to claim their first win of the season, 3-2. The game marked an important moment for team chemistry with a young squad.
“We’re just starting to get down our form of play,” said head coach Dave Collins. “We’re a young team with only one senior, so we’re just starting to learn to play together, slow down and make the small passes.”
Brittany Mosher broke the two-point tie with the winning goal assisted by Sarah Michaud. Michaud kicked in the game-tying ball in regulation time. Kristen Long had the Panthers’ first goal of the game.
“It was a whole team effort with the midfielders moving the ball and dropping back to defense and the forwards taking care of the ball when they had it,” said Collins.
Freshman keeper Vicki McIntyre blocked 12 of 21 shots in the Central Aroostook net, and impressed the coaching staff with her guardianship of the Panther goal.
Limestone’s Kellie Peers had both Eagle goals.
The Central Aroostook boys blanked Limestone for their second win of the 2008 season. Dan Brewer led the offense with three goals toward the 6-0 victory. Garrett Stiles, Manny Martinez and Spencer Stetson had one goal each, and Mike McClung added one assist to his record. Keeper Ross Grass stop the two shots on the Panther goal.
Tigers takedown Easton, CAHS
The first 35 minutes of play went scoreless in the girls’ Class D match between Fort Fairfield and Easton on Monday, as both defensive lines kept back the opposing teams efforts. The Tigers broke into the game when Courtney Churchill scored off an assist from Amber Forsman. Kelsie York topped up Fort Fairfield’s lead with a second-half goal assisted by Churchill toward the 2-0 final score.
Tiger keeper Paige Beaulieu blocked seven of nine shots, and Easton keeper Taylor Burtt stopped 25 of 30 shots.
The Fort Fairfield boys’ varsity soccer team blanked Central Aroostook on their home field last Wednesday, 2-0. Tiger Josh Churchill found a clear lane to kick in the first goal in the beginning of the opening half, and Derek Dufour secured the win in the closing minutes of the game. Keeper Austin Dufour blocked six of seven shots on the Tiger net.
Grass stopped five of 14 shots on the Panther goal.
The Fort Fairfield girls picked up their second win of the season in their night game against Central Aroostook, 7-2. Churchill and Rose-Mary Williams kicked in two goals each to lead offense. Kaitlyn McLaughlin, Keiza Berniche and Kaitlin Kinsey chipped in one goal each. Churchill and McLaughlin both had one assist. Keepers Beaulieu and Katy Donavan blocked two of five shots.
Long and Mosher made the Panther goals. Keeper Desray Brewer saved 13 of 26 shots from the Panther net.
Beaver girls fast and furious
The Beaver girls blanked Wisdom in Monday’s competition at St. Agatha, 3-0. Lindsey Blackstone teamed up with Morgan Blackstone to score two goals, and Morgan Berube added another goal. Rachel Palmer made two saves on three shots in the Washburn net.
Jordan McLaughlin started a second-half comeback for the Washburn boys with one goal, but the Beavers had fallen too far behind Wisdom who took the home field win, 9-1. WDHS keeper Justin Howe stopped 13 of 32 shots.
Senior Beaver Berube blasted in five goals for the 5-2 Washburn win over Central Aroostook on Friday. Charly Chandler and Blackstone both had assists in the victory. Palmer blocked three of five shots on the Washburn goal.
Long and Mosher had a goal each for the Panthers, and Rachel Grew had an assist. Keeper McIntyre made 10 saves on 17 shots.
Washburn girls’ varsity soccer held firm in their first home game of the 2008 season for a 2-0 win over Easton last Wednesday. Berube and Blackstone kicked in one goal each assisted by Meghan Saucier and Berube, respectively. Keeper Palmer stopped two of three shots at the Beaver net.
Burtt made 11 saves on 20 shots for Easton.
The Easton boys went into double overtime with Southern Aroostook with a one-point tie last Friday. The Bears won the day in front of their home crowd as Jonah Bacon passed the ball to Brad Trask with 1:17 left for the goal.
Trask made the first goal assisted by Corey White. Keeper Cody Thompkins blocked 10 of 23 shots on the Easton net.
Ashland keeps in step with last season
The Ashland Hornets claimed another victory in their first road games of the season at St. Agatha on Aug. 19.
Kenny Tarr broke a three-point tie in the beginning of the second half, to help Ashland boy’s varsity team post their second win of the season over Wisdom. Tyler Condon kicked in two goals, and Jacob Paradis had one goal. Keeper Bobby Gardiner stopped 12 of 26 shots.
The varsity girls’ blanked Wisdom 8-0 for a resounding second win. Jackie D’Ozier posted three goals and Macie Pelkey totaled two toward the offensive victory.
Crystal Cook, Brooke Labelle and Anna Paradis had one goal each for the Hornets.
