On Feb. 13-14, the Caribou Recreation Department hosted the 37th Annual fifth and sixth grade County Pee Wee Basketball Tournament.
This was the first year for the tournament to be held in the new Wellness and Recreation Center and what a successful tournament it was.

The Caribou Rec. Vikings defended their County Championship title from 2008, as well as this years’ undefeated season.
The games got underway on Friday evening with Washburn and Ft. Fairfield battling on the court. Washburn started out slow, but managed to get by Ft. Fairfield with a big fourth quarter. Derek Baker was leading scorer for Washburn with ten points and Robbie Watson was leading scorer for Ft. Fairfield with 11 points. The final in game one was 31-24.
Game 2 Friday night featured Presque Isle and Mars Hill. Chandler Brewer of Mars Hill was unstoppable and put 22 points through the net. Mars Hill went on to win 47-11.
Saturday, games continued with Ashland and Washburn starting it out. Jarrett Olsen and Noah Caron both had great games for Washburn and scored a combined twenty-one points to lead Washburn to a 41-23 victory. Ashland’s top scorer was Mike Cook with eleven points.
Caribou and St. Agatha played game four of the tournament with Caribou moving on. Colby Holdsworth shot great from the field netting ten points.
The rest of the scoring column was pretty even with Donovan Savage, Gabe Massey, Mason Huck, Austin Griffeth and Nate Wyman each putting in four points apiece, while Dustin Bouchard sunk three and Nick Frost, Dayne Savage, Tyler Dombroski, and Taylor Thibodeau all added two. The final in this match up was 43-2.
Easton and Madawaska played the next game of the day with Madawaska picking up the win 31-24. Easton’s Connor Burtt had 11 points and Nick Clark added nine.
Madawaska’s top scorer was Nick Thibeault with nineteen points. Cullen Helgeson followed with eight points.
Mars Hill met up with Limestone late in the morning to clinch another victory. Brewer of Mars Hill dumped in 21 points. Eli Pangburn put down seven and Zack McClung shot for six points. Limestone had two scorers: Dylan Nadeau with seven points and Zack Weatherhead four points.
The first semifinal game consisted of Caribou and Washburn. Dayne Savage of Caribou controlled the game and led in the scoring column with nine points. Donovan Savage netted five and Tyler Dombroski put down four. Wyman, Thibodeau, Huck, Massey, Bouchard and Frost all scored two to beat Washburn 32-14. Washburn’s Jarrett Olsen threw in nine from the field.
During the second semifinal game, Madawaska j ust squeaked a victory over Mars Hill 28-27. This was the best match up of the day.
Mars Hills’ Brewer, who had all of his scoring in the second half, scored 11. McClung followed with five points. Madawaska’s Thibeault could not be stopped as he hit eight field goals for a total of 16 points. Helgeson put in eight.
Featuring the championship game was Caribou and Madawaska. Madawaska put in a hard fought game with Helgeson swishing 16 points and Thibeault eight Dayne Savage of Caribou though was phenomenal in the first quarter scoring ten of his 13 points to lead the Vikings to a second Championship.
Taylor Thibodeau had great defense, many rebounds and was next in the scoring column adding seven.
To follow was Bouchard six and Donovan Savage, Massey and Holdsworth each with four, Dombroski, Griffeth and Wyman all put in two. The Vikings won the 2009 Pee Wee Championship 44-28.
