1828 – Dennis Fairbanks, considered the founder of Presque Isle, receives a land grant from the U.S. Government for one square mile (640 acres) of land. In return for the land deed, he is obligated to establish a settlement with a saw mill and grist mill to help the settlement flourish.  His settlement was then known as “Fairbanks Mill”.
