Panthers slide by Beavers
The Central Aroostook Panthers just barely outscored the Washburn Beavers on May 20 in Mars Hill to take a 16-14 victory. The Beavers, who lost to the Panthers at home in a five-inning blowout earlier in the season, were the first to score, sending in three runs in the first inning against CAHS starting pitcher Brendan York.
The Panthers took the lead in the second inning 7-3, then leapt ahead again 8-5 in the third as Manny Martinez came in to relieve York. Washburn retaliated in the fourth inning, however, scoring four more runs to take a 9-8 lead and holding Central Aroostook scoreless for another inning.
But a seven-run fifth inning rally led by Mitch Folsom gave the Panthers the final lead and eventual win. Folsom’s two-run double started off the inning and three RBIs from Martinez and two from Garrett Stiles and Will Delong added to Central Aroostook’s score.
Washburn came alive in the sixth with five runs, but ended their streak one run short of a tie and a final run by CAHS at the bottom of the sixth gave the Panthers a two-run lead. Washburn starter Matt Howe suffered the loss but contributed three singles and an RBI for the Beavers. Sebastian Viola added a double, a single and two RBIs and brother Sal Viola had two singles and two RBIs.
Kristin Long doubled, hit two singles and had five RBIs as the Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Beavers 16-2 on May 20. CAHS scored 9 times in the first three innings and sent home seven more runs in the fourth to take their fourth win. For Washburn, Meghan Saucier hit an in-the-park home run, taking all four bases as the Panthers outfield scrambled around, trying to get the ball in but failing. Washburn’s second run came in the third inning, but CAHS kept the Lady Beavers’ bats silent for the remainder of the game.
