ImageMARS HILL – Charles Llewellyn Peers, 89, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2009, at The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. He was born on February 25, 1920 in Caswell, the son of John and Effie (O’Neal) Peers. Image
    Charles was a decorated veteran of World War II, having volunteered as an original member of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. He served in North Africa and the entire European Theater. While stationed in England, he met and married Elizabeth “Betty” Wilson, a native of Scotland, in Leicester City. They celebrated 64 years of marriage on September 30, 2008. Following the war, Charles and Betty settled in Mars Hill, where they raised their family. Charles was a potato farmer for 30 years, after which time he was employed at Loring AFB as a civilian retiring in 1985. Throughout his life, Charles was an avid horseman. In retirement years, Charles and Betty founded “Charbet Farm” raising and racing standard bred horses.  
    In addition to his wife Betty of Mars Hill, he is survived by three sons, Charles L. Peers of Easton, David R. Peers of Mars Hill, Dale Peers and his wife Mary of Easton; eight grandchildren, Lisa and Neal Grass, Tom and Shannon Peers, Trisha and Forrest Grant, Breeanna and Joseph Locke, McKayla Peers, Daniel and Emily Peers, Jennifer and Joshua Tweedie, and Katie Peers and her fiancé David Danielson, Jr.; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Louis Peers and his wife June of Limestone; a sister, Marie “Peggy” Bengston and her husband Erwin of New Sweden; a sister-in-law, Alice Peers of Caswell, along with many special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Charles was predeceased by three brothers, Abel, John, and Calvin; two sisters, Ameletta “Sis” Kennedy and Faye Michaud.
    In keeping with Charles’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at East Ridge Union Church in Mars Hill with Pastor Lawrence Beals officiating. A military committal was at Peers Cemetery, in Caswell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charles’s memory to East Ridge Union Church, P.O. Box 45, Mars Hill, ME 04758 or to Pastor Lawrence Beals in support of his extended ministry 35 Village Court, Blaine ME 04734. Arrangements are in the care of Duncan Funeral Home.
