Ricker Rumblings
By Lois Downing

Sunday morning and there is a rainfall, a heavy one as I write. What else is new!
The rains didn’t dampen the celebration of the Fourth of July. Many, many people were in town for the Fourth, some to visit with relatives, some to celebrate the glorious Fourth and others for reunions and more just wanted to see what was going on. And goings-on there were!
Thanks to all those who participated in the Fourth of July parade. My enthusiasm was not dampened to see the parade, but the rains did take a toll on some celebrants. The big lawn at Ricker was covered with people, old and young and we witnessed a good parade. Thanks to all who paraded!
Midnight Madness was a hit too! Hot dog stands were plentiful and we appreciated that. Lots of bargains and giveaways. Are we ready to do it again. You betcha!
Sympathy is extended to the McPartland family in the loss of their mother, Lois. Her funeral was a tribute to the love and grace of Lois.
On another note, I have a small supply of Box Tops for Education. People save them for the schools to obtain articles. If you would like them, just give me a ring, 532-2125 or come by Ricker Plaza.
Rita McDade informed me of her mother’s birthday, July 9. Her name is Monique Beaulieu and she will be 100 years! Give Monique a card or call as she has many friends in this area. Rita planned to spend this century mark with her mother.
On another note, Alice McQuarrie is at the home of her daughter Mary. Alice has been hospitalized for several weeks at a Portland hospital. We miss you, Alice.
Floyd Ivey is another person who will be missed. I met Floyd when he was a greeter at Walmart’s. Always a tease, his loving wife Betty and survivors will miss him. God bless Floyd, who died July 1.
Karen Bither is having a few days with friends in the Augusta area. Karen was happy to get away for a few days.
Retired Senior Volunteer group is starting a potluck in August. Look for more information on this project later.
Yours truly spent a few days two weeks ago with my daughter, Kathryn Hall in Bangor.
The table manned by Don and Charlotte Marley at the Rec building on Friday, in celebration of the Fourth of July activities, made up over 30 strawberry shortcakes. This was an RSVP project. The berries were picked by several people and I heard they were “good-good, mmm.”
Alfred McCluskey has a new car! Good for Alfred. Now he can be on the road again.
Harold and Janice McCarthy have moved to another complex. They are on the first floor at their new place. Janice was back for the parade and saw many of her friends here.
Priscilla Brownlow has had hephew from Miles, Texas visiting during the Fourth of July celebration. His mother, who is Priscilla’s sister-in-law, was also visiting and so was her husband Ron.
Now that the televisions have gone digital, do you see a big difference in your viewing? I do, the picture is sharper but some would not agree to that!
This is it for today, folks. Have a wonderful July and happy and safe driving.
My thought for the day is taken from Isaiah 55:6: “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.”
God bless.

Sherman Area Senior Citizens Club

The Sherman, Stacyville, Silver Ridge and Benedicta Club of Senior Citizens drove to Patten to eat at Debbie’s Deli Restaurant, at noontime, as an early summer outing to celebrate the July 4th special day that occurred on Saturday this year and yes, strawberry shortcake was the favored dessert.
Our next meeting will be at the Sherman gym, as usual, at 11:30 a.m.
It was good that a visitor from away appeared, with her mother, Terese Albert. Hopefully, the rainy, showery weather that has persisted, will depart and grace us with sunshine and more pleasant temperatures! Come again, Bonnie Stratton.
Others present were Fred and Annie Atkinson, Dean and Frances McKenney, Linniea Perry, Eva Perry, Donna Grass, Bonita Staples and Esther Greenier.
