Gervais leads Maine Junior Golf northern tour

    NEW LIMERICK — Houlton Community Golf Course hosted the Maine Junior Golf Tour Monday, one of six golf tournaments held in northern Maine under the auspices of the Maine State Golf Association.
    Ian Gervais of New Limerick won the age 15-17 division, firing a 74 while Nick Chase, also of New Limerick, placed second with an 81. Logan Holmes of Houlton and Samuel Peabody of Old Town, tied for third with 88s.
    In the age 13-14 category, Parker Sanderson of New Limerick shot a 105.
    Fort Fairfield’s Robbie Watson carded a nine-hole score of 50 to win the 12-under division. He was followed by Houlton’s Kyle Bouchard in second with a 54; Drew Marino, also of Houlton, in third with a 58; and Hodgdon’s Sam Horton in fourth with a 64.

ON THE SIXTH GREEN — Ian Gervais of New Limerick has led the way this year in the northern leg of the Maine Junior Golf Tour. Monday at Houlton Community Golf Course, the 17-year-old fired a 74 to win the age 15-17 division, seven strokes ahead of Nick Chase, also of New Limerick.

    The top scorers from the July 16 junior event at Presque Isle Country Club were: age 15-17, Gervais, 72; Evan McCarthy of Patten, 79; and Mapleton’s Evan Waddell, 86. Age 14-14: Sanderson, 92. And age 12-under: Watson, 43; Ryan Chasse of Fort Kent, 50; and Husain Kamran, also of Fort Kent, 58.
    In the July 13 event at Mars Hill Country Club, Gervais again won the age 15-17 category with a 76 followed by PI’s David Dubois with 82 and Waddell at 87. Sanderson won the age 13-14 bracket with a 99 while Watson won the age 12 and under event with a 42 followed by Chasse in second with 45 and Hasain in third with 71.
    According to Marty Gervais, who coordinates the Northern junior tour, the tournaments begin in late June and continue through the end of July.  These events lead up to the Maine Junior Amateur Golf Tournament which is held in Cumberland at Val Halla Country Club on August 4-6.
    The MSGA junior events are open to all junior golfers from 9 to 17 years of age.  The purpose of the events are to provide a competitive tournament environment while encouraging proper etiquette and fair play.  There are divisions for boys and girls ages 9-12, 13-14, and 15-17.  The 9-12 age group plays nine holes while the 13- 17 year-olds play 18 holes.
    The final two Northern junior events will be at VaJoWa in Island Falls on Thursday, July 23rd and Monday July 27th at Jato Highlands in Lincoln.  For more information check out the Web site at mesga.org or call the MSGA headquarters at 207-829-3549.
