ImageHoulton – John Woodrow McAfee, 86, went to be with his Lord and his loved ones who have gone before him on Aug. 29, 2009, at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Caribou. He was born June 4, 1923, at Houlton, the second of thirteen children of James and Roxie (Sewell) McAfee.
    John attended Houlton schools. He was especially proud to have served our Country in World War II. From 1944 to 1946, he was in the US Navy serving on the USS Vandenberg. During this time he was stationed in the Pacific Ocean and later spent time on the Marshall Island. John had a career as a aircraft structural mechanic. This job took him to many places such as Greenland, Iceland and Labrador. From these excursions, many memories and stories were formed. Most of his work was at Loring Air Force Base as a civil engineer. He repaired aircraft and at times was asked to instruct classes for servicemen stationed at Loring. He retired in 1973. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, a Boy Scout leader and a member of the Court Street Baptist Church. John was an avid outdoors man and for many years was a Maine Guide, anticipating the seasons for the sportsmen.
    John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Geraldine R. (Stitham, Slipp) McAfee; two sons, James McAfee of Littleton, Charles McAfee of Houlton; three daughters, Cheryl Lister and her husband Al of Caribou, Connie McAfee of Houlton, Cynthia Hawkins and her husband Russell of Rowley, MA; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four brothers, Albert McAfee of Houlton, Dana McAfee and Kenneth McAfee both of Littleton, David McAfee of Augusta; four sisters, Laura Snell of Ludlow, Phyllis Spellman and Nonie Schools both of Houlton, Judy Fitzpatrick of Littleton; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his son, Dale; an infant granddaughter, Beth Ann McAfee; and four brothers, Phillip, Clarence, Orin and Donald McAfee.
    Friends called Tuesday 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dunn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Art Myers officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Gifts may be made in John’s memory to the First Baptist Church or to Cancer Research, c/o Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park Street, Houlton, 04730. The family would like to thank the Maine Veteran’s Home, Madigan Home Health Care, and all the doctors and nurses for the tender loving care given to John during his illness.
