‘Mews and Yips’ from the Central Aroostook Humane Society

Wow, again we find ourselves full to the brim. Funny how quickly that can happen, and it isn’t just cats this time. We have a number of little dogs that we are holding for the state; the case has to go to court and the courts will decide who gets ownership of the animals.

Until that time, we cannot adopt the dogs out; we are only holding them. But we do have a number of dogs available for adoption. Check out our Web site at www.centralaroostookhumanesociety.org.
Happy ending story: Our old husky, Angel, has found a forever home!! She came from a neglect situation where she never knew when her next meal would come. She has found a forever home where she will be cared for and loved. The older dogs are the ones that tug at my heart. Her son, Shadow, is still with us and he is a nice boy. He loves to be walked and will be neutered soon. Shadow is not good with cats though. It would be wonderful to find this great dog a loving home.
This has been quite a year for puppies for us, as well. We have had an unusual amount brought to the shelter. Unfortunately, a lot of people underestimate the importance of a puppy staying with its mother. We can usually tell a dog that has been taken away too early. They have not had a chance to learn social graces and many times are food aggressive. It is illegal in the state of Maine to give away or sell a puppy before its 56th day of life. (7 § 3938-A) “Minimum age of transfer for cats and dogs: A person or an animal shelter, boarding kennel, breeding kennel or pet shop that sells, gives away or otherwise transfers ownership of a dog or cat before it has reached its 56th day of life commits a civil violation for which a fine of not less than $50 nor more than $200 may be adjudged.” Some breeders insist on puppies staying with their litter and mother even a few weeks longer.
If you ever get the urge to love on dogs and cats, puppies and kittens, come visit us at the Central Aroostook Humane Society. A kind hand will work magic on the animals and will be good for your soul, too. To volunteer, you must be at least 16 years old. Dog walkers are welcome, as well as people to socialize the cats. Who knows … you may even find a forever friend. Our business hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday or give us a call at 764-3441. Please have your pets spayed or neutered.

ACAP EMPLOYEES HELD A FUND-RAISER for the Central Aroostook Humane Society during December. On Dec 22, three staff members from ACAP brought in the donations from the agency. There were monetary gifts given as well as a lot of items from the shelter’s “wish/needs” list. It was a lot of fun! ACAP employees really got into it and helped in some way. One staff person handed me money and with a note on it saying this was to help the “bark bark.” Pictured, from left: Heidi Rackliffe and Jamie Vick, ACAP; Sharon Brown, CAHS employee; and Vi Belanger, ACAP. Brown was hesitant to be in the picture but with a bit of coaxing from  ACAP staff, she was persuaded to join them.
