Middle school seventh-grade girls take league title

    CARIBOU —The basketball season has come to a close for the Caribou boys and girls squads. The CMS seventh grade girls capped off a perfect season with a convincing 50-12 victory over Houlton Jan. 14.

    The CMS eighth-grade boys also experienced their fair share of success, finishing the season with an 11-4 record, which was second best in the Aroostook County league.
     In girls basketball, the seventh grade Vikings finished 15-0 on the year and were crowned Aroostook County League champions after their game with Houlton Jan. 14.

    Hannah Graham led all scoring with 22 points, while displaying impressive ball handling and defense, according to her coach John Habeeb. She finished the season with 281 points. Teammate Sarah Doak also had a great game by scoring 10 points and grabbing double-digit rebounds for the 15th straight game. She ended her season with 147 points. Erin Patton, the team’s most improved player, played aggressive defense and poured in 10 points. Lauren Chapman added four points, while Abbi Theriault and Emilee Susi each had two. Madison Yakel, Kristin Macek, Morgan Outing and Cassidy Woo all contributed on the defensive end.
    Leading Houlton was Emily Mooers with six points.
    Caribou led 18-2, 22-4 and 40-4 at the quarter breaks.
    On Jan. 12, Caribou hosted Madawaska and rolled to a 32-14 victory. Caribou led 8-2, 14-6 and 32-6 at the quarter breaks.
    Doak led all scorers with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Graham chipped in eight points, 10 steals and six assists. Morgan Outing, Erin Patton and Emilee Susi each had four points, while Lauren Chapman added two.
    Leading Madawaska was Alexis Levesque with 10 points.
Boys basketball
    The Caribou eighth grade boys basketball team finished its season Jan. 12 with a 54-51 victory over Madawaska. The Viking win avenged an earlier loss on the season and also ended the Owls’ undefeated season.
    Caribou led 12-11 in the first quarter, but trailed 26-22 at the half. The Vikings rebounded to a 39-35 lead after three stanzas.
    Caribou was able to work the inside game and use its height advantage to wear down the Owls. Matt Frost had a big night with 21 points for Caribou, while Matt Milliard added 12; Derek Richardson, eight; and Dylan Berkoski, seven (including the game-winning basket and free throw with 15 seconds left).
    Madawaska’s Nick Thibeault led the Owls with 21 points, while Ian Lee added 13.
    Other recent games included a 55-42 victory over Presque Isle Blue and a 48-40 loss to Houlton.
    At Presque Isle, the Vikings trailed 15-9, 24-21 and 34-32 at the quarter breaks before taking the lead in the final frame.
    Caribou had a big offensive night from Breen Blackstone as he netted 19 points, while Frost added 18; and Adam Collins, five.
    Connor Seward led P.I. Blue with 14 points.
    At Houlton, the Vikings trailed 9-6 in the first quarter, but led 18-17 at halftime. Houlton went back up 36-28 after three stanzas and held on for the win.
    Houlton’s 6-foot, 4-inch Elyiah Crockett had his game going against the Vikings as he erupted for 33 points to dominate play inside. Caribou played tough, but could not overcome Houlton’s size advantage and inside play, according to coach Steve Perreault.
    Derek Richardson led Caribou with 10 points, while Blackstone added nine.
    For the season, Frost led Caribou with 158 points, followed by Blackstone’s 100. Richardson and Berkoski were the leading rebounders, while Collins led the team with 10 3-pointers. Kameron Manter had seven 3-pointers, while Matt Curry had five and Michael Boone had four. Matt Milliard and Cody Herbert were top defensive players for Caribou along with Blackstone.
