The regular season comes to a close this week and several girls basketball squads are eyeing an extended playoff push this year. The final Maine Principals’ Association Heal Points standings will not be unveiled until Saturday, but should bring plenty of good news for local squads.

The preliminary playoffs begin Tuesday, Feb. 9, with the quarterfinal round commencing Friday, Feb. 12 at the Bangor Auditorium.
Based on the standings as of Tuesday morning, the Presque Isle, Central Aroostook, Fort Fairfield, Washburn and Ashland squads are all playoff bound.
In Eastern Class B, Presque Isle (15-1, 116.3580) is the No. 2 seed after holding the top spot for much of the season. The top 10 teams make the playoffs.     In Eastern Class D, Central Aroostook (15-2, 96.2055 points) has assured itself of the top seed, while Fort Fairfield (16-1, 71.9953) is second; Washburn (12-4, 57.7614) is fourth; and Ashland (7-9, 25.9622) is eighth. Easton (6-10, 18.7455) is currently out of the top 10, but as of press time had two games remaining with still a chance to make it in.
If the standings hold, CAHS would play the winner of the No. 8 (Ashland) vs. No. 9 (Schenck) prelim on Monday, Feb. 15 at 8:35 p.m. at the Bangor Auditorium; Ashland would host Schenck in the prelims on Tuesday, Feb. 9; Washburn would face No. 5 Bangor Christian, 7:05 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15 in Bangor; and Fort Fairfield would play Monday, Feb. 15 at 11:05 a.m. against the winner of the No. 7 (Deer Isle-Stonington) vs. No. 10 (Greater Houlton Christian) matchup.
