Vikings drop fourth straight

    The regular season comes to a close this week and several girls basketball squads are eyeing an extended playoff push this year. The final Maine Principals’ Association Heal Points standings will not be unveiled until Saturday, but should bring plenty of good news for local squads.     The preliminary playoffs begin Tuesday, Feb. 9, with the quarterfinal round commencing Friday, Feb. 12 at the Bangor Auditorium.
    Based on the standings as of Tuesday morning, the Presque Isle, Caribou, Central Aroostook, Fort Fairfield, Washburn and Ashland squads are all playoff bound.
    In Eastern Class B, Presque Isle (15-1, 116.3580) is the No. 2 seed after holding the top spot for much of the season. Caribou (8-9, 52.6235) is ninth. The top 10 teams make the playoffs. If the standings hold, Caribou would play at the No. 8 seed (currently Waterville, 10-6, 58.8889) in a preliminary playoff on Tuesday, Feb. 9. If Presque Isle stays as the No. 2 seed it will play Saturday, Feb. 13 at 9:05 a.m. against the winner of the No. 7 (Hermon, 9-8, 59.7222) vs. No. 10 (John Bapst, 9-8, 49.8457) prelim.
    In Eastern Class D, Central Aroostook (15-2, 96.2055 points) has assured itself of the top seed, while Fort Fairfield (16-1, 71.9953) is second; Washburn (12-4, 57.7614) is fourth; and Ashland (7-9, 25.9622) is eighth. Easton (6-10, 18.7455) is currently out of the top 10, but as of press time had two games remaining with still a chance to make it in. Limestone-MSSM (3-13, 6.2636) is out of the playoff picture.
    If the standings hold, CAHS would play the winner of the No. 8 (Ashland) vs. No. 9 (Schenck) prelim on Monday, Feb. 15 at 8:35 p.m. at the Bangor Auditorium; Ashland would host Schenck in the prelims on Tuesday, Feb. 9; Washburn would face No. 5 Bangor Christian, 7:05 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15 in Bangor; and Fort Fairfield would play Monday, Feb. 15 at 11:05 a.m. against the winner of the No. 7 (Deer Isle-Stonington) vs. No. 10 (Greater Houlton Christian) matchup.
    The following is a recap of regular season games played through Monday.
    Houlton 47, Caribou 42 — At Caribou Monday, the visiting Shiretowners squeaked past Caribou in a tight contest. Vanessa Sanderson paced Houlton with 18 points, while Martha McPartland added 11 and Taylor Bailey 10.
    Dayna Michaud sparked Caribou with 12 points, while Jenna Selander added 10; Jamie Martin, eight; Danielle Soucy, six; and Danielle Violette, Alexa Massey and Brittany Doak each had two.
    It was Caribou’s fourth consecutive loss.
    Washburn 54, Van Buren 24 — At Van Buren Monday, Rebecca Campbell tallied 16 points while Rayah Saucier chipped in 13 to lead Washburn to the lopsided victory. Meghan Saucier added 10 points in the win, while Jordan Chandler contributed seven; Sarah Sjoberg and Felecia Cochrane, each three; and Olivia Doody, two.
    Ashlie Wilson paced Van Buren with 12 points.
    The Beavers led 16-2, 37-16 and 46-21 at the quarter breaks.
        Fort Kent 85, LCS/MSSM 29 — At Fort Kent Monday, Fort Kent’s Taylor Boucher single-handedly beat Limestone-MSSM as she dropped 36 points on the Eagles, while Samantha Carapellucci added 17 for the Warriors.
    Stephanie Leighton paced the Eagles with 14 points, while Savanna Gray added six; Jasmine Cote, four; Caitlin Good, three; and Ashlyn Kelly, two.
    Washburn 47, LCS/MSSM 24 — At Washburn Friday, Campbell scored 21 points to help lead Washburn to its ninth straight victory. Rayah Saucier added 13 points for the Beavers, while Angie Hernandez chipped in five; Megan Saucier, four; Kristi Sperrey, two; Sjoberg and Cochran, each one.
    Good, Leighton and Amanda Allen each had six points to pace the Eagles, while Gray added five and Kelly, one.
    Washburn led 8-2, 13-8, and 30-15 at the quarter breaks.
    Fort Kent 40, Caribou 39 — At Caribou Thursday, Fort Kent’s Carapellucci hit one of her two foul shots with one second remaining to give Fort Kent the victory over Caribou. Taylor Boucher led Fort Kent with 18 points, while Carapellucci finished with 12 points.
    Selander scored 14 points for the Vikings, while Michaud added nine; Massey, eight; and Soucy and Doak, four each.
    Fort Kent led 10-8 in the first quarter, but Caribou was on top 21-19 at halftime. The Vikings trailed 30-27 after three stanzas.
    Washburn 47, Easton 39 — At Washburn Wednesday, Rebecca Campbell netted a game-high 28 points to lead Washburn past Easton. Chandler chipped in six points; while; Hernandez and Sjoberg each had four; Rayah Saucier had three; Meghan Saucier, two.
    Carla Halverson had 17 points to lead the Bears, while Brooke Hammond and Arianna Babineau each had eight; Abigail Poole and Katie Cyr each two; and Sydney Trask and Sarah Plourde, each one.
    The two squads were tied 16-16 at the end of the first quarter, but Washburn staked a 25-20 halftime lead; that grew to 37-28 after three stanzas.
    Southern Aroostook 58, Limestone-MSSM 30 — At Limestone Wednesday, Southern Aroostook’s Liz Goodall scored 20 points to lift the Warriors of Dyer Brook past Limestone-MSSM. Jasmine Rockwell added 12 points, while Shelby Hartin had 10.
    Stephanie Leighton led the Eagles with 11 points, while Victoria St. Pierre added five; Good and Allen, each four; and Chelsea Leighton, Kelly, and Gray, each had two.
    Southern Aroostook led 23-9, 25-13 and 40-22 at the quarter breaks.
