On a typical day, the Houlton Animal Shelter is never the same.  We have new animals coming in all the time.   We hopefully, if all goes well, have adoptions in the course of a day.  We see so many new faces everyday, hear so many new things everyday, that we never know how it is going to go.  It is something different all the time.  But there is one constant that is there every time we walk in the door.  It has been a constant, for some of them, for 3 years.  I am talking about 12 cats that have been with our shelter for 2-3 years.  Some of these cats, this time is 80% of their life.  They have been with us way too long and because of this, I am waiving the adoption fee for these particular pets.
I can tell you pretty much everything about everyone of them. For example, there is Randy. He would make a perfect cat for the right person.  He isn’t overly lovable. He is kind of a loner. But he would do great in the right home.  Then there is Nikki. What a sweetie she is.  She is an older girl, about 8 years old to be exact. She has been at the shelter for about 2 years.  She is very quiet and loves a good lap to curl up in.  Also in this group is Diamond. He is a shy cat, but once you get to know him and he gets to know you, he will be your friend for life.
Lena is a beautiful calico, who has been with us for 2 years. She is only 3, so as you can see, she has been with us a majority of her life. Delilah is the same. She is a torti, who has been with us most of her life. She is a “singer” as I call her, which mean she loves to purr your ear off. If you want an “american Kitty idol” she is the one for you! Also there is MIssy, who is an adorable long haired all black female cat. She is about 3 years old and has been at the shelter as long as I can remember.  She gets along with other cats. Most of the time you see her, though, she is by herself, sleeping in the sun. She loves the sun.
Next is Georgina.  She is one that breaks my heart.  She is so lonely for someone, but no one ever looks at her. She isn’t a cute new kitten, she is even beautifully marked. She is just who she is, Georgina.  She needs someone so badly. She is a 4 year old calico, who has been with us for almost 3 years. She is a sweet cat, but she will need someone who knows how to get a cats girlish figure back. She is, saying it nicely, big boned. But with the right person, she would be a wonderful cat.
Nicole is a very cute tiger cat, who like the cats before her, has spent most of her 3 year life with us. She has the nicest eyes. She looks at you and you can see she just wants some love. I don’t think she would ask for much more than that from a family.  Esme could be her twin and they aren’t even related. She is another love bug, who is tired of seeing the same four walls. She has seen them for 2 years and is begging for a change. Her friend, Trinity, also wants a change. She is a 3 year old, who has been with us for 2 years. She is a ham of a cat, always wanting to be rubbed.
Ebony is a  quiet girl. She is 3 years old and desperately wanting a home.  She just lives to lie around and relax. Why couldn’t we all be so lucky? And last, but surely not least, is Glenna. Her face is adorable. I can pick her out of Community room right off. She is about 3 years old and has called the shelter home for almost 2 years. That is way too long in our eyes and hers too. She is waiting for the right person.
All of these cats are wonderful and I am not just saying this because I work with them everyday. They are all spayed or neutered and up to date on their shots. We, as a shelter, need to see these cats in new homes. We all are filled with cats in our own homes, or we would take them ourselves. We have done everything for these cats and want to see them loved in a new family.
That is why, like I said in the beginning, the adoption fee is waived. You will still need to fill out a pre-adopt and be approved.  we want to make sure they go into loving homes, because they deserve nothing less.
We are asking that they be indoor homes only. these cats have been indoors for 2 or more years. It would be unfair to make them outdoor cats now. All these cats want is a warm lap.
They will be quiet additions to your family. No curtain climbing or running around, I promise. Just laid back sweet cats is all you will get with these 12. To me, that sounds like a pretty good deal. Doesn’t it to you?  Come see them or call us at 532-2862 and ask about our long timers. I promise when you meet them, you will not be disappointed.
