Youth hockey teams experience success on the ice
The Presque Isle novice hockey team defeated Plaster Rock in a high-scoring affair, 23-17, played at the Forum Feb. 6.
Plaster Rock took a four-goal lead in the first period, but the hosts battled back for the victory. Jake Stevens scored 15 goals, while Bailey York had five, Ian Michaud two and Caleb Legassie one for the winners.
Others contributing were Landyn Newlands, Torey Levesque, Brandon McKnight, Carter Jackson, Nick Morningstar and Adian Johnson. Presque Isle held a 61-33 advantage in shots on goal.
Plaster Rock’s goals were all scored by the same player.
Presque Isle is coached by Bob Davis, Terry Levesque, Bub York and Doug Carlisle.
The Presque Isle Youth Hockey novice and IP teams had an in-house jamboree Dec. 30. The teams were coached by Doug Carlisle, Jr., Doug Carlisle, Sr., Bob Davis, Terry Levesque, Kevin Schumacher, Phil King, Aaron Sweetser and Todd Johnson.
Goaltending duties were shared among the four teams competing by Heinz Schumacher, who faced 112 shots in the tournament; Kyra Schumacher, who faced 90 shots; and Bradyn Matheson, who faced 64 shots.
Fifty four goals were scored out of the 266 shots taken.
Team one consisted of Jake Stevens, Caleb Lagasse, Nick Morningstar, Carter Jackson, Josh Hopkins, Allison Sweetser and Cameron Levasseur. Playing on team two were Bailey York, Adian Johnson, Holden Stoutamyer, Landyn Newlands, Alex Sweetser, Gage Letourneau and Adrian Staples. On team three were Torey Levesque, Colby Carlisle, Connor DeMerchant, Noah Roy, Jason Wilcox and Matt Hartt. Playing on team four were Amelia Theriault, Chris Bearden, Cullin Caverhill, Brandon McKnight, Ian Michaud, Ashley Crowley and Jonah Roy.
After the six-game day, players on all the teams were treated to pizza and juice.
The Presque Isle pee wees, led by Alex Michaud’s hat trick and two goals by Colin McKay, defeated Kedgewick Feb. 7, 5-2.
Jillian Flynn, the PI goalie, was strong throughout the game, while Daniel Boucher, Joseph Patenaude and Jeremy Gingrich also had solid outings.
The Presque Isle Atoms competed in a tournament held in Plaster Rock Jan. 22-24. In the opener, Presque Isle defeated Tobique Valley, 2-1, with Thomas Patenaude and Denny Young scoring for the winners. Isaac Madore was named player of the game.
In the second game, Presque Isle was blanked by Grand Falls I by a score of 2-0. Goalie Heinz Schumacher faced 15 shots and was named player of the game.
Against Fredericton, Presque Isle scored a 6-2 decision behind Alex Brewer’s three goals. Young added two goals and Patenaude one for the local Atoms. Ryan Player was the player of the game choice.
The semifinal round saw Presque Isle lose to Southern Victoria II, 7-5. Player scored two goals, with Devin Ireland, Madore and Young notching one apiece. Tyler Levesque earned player of the game honors.
The team also played games Jan. 17 against Southern Victoria II and Feb. 6 against Tobique Valley. In the Jan. 17 game, PI fell, 6-5. Brewer scored twice and Patenaude, Young and Greyson Sonntag added one apiece.
PI bounced back for a 10-1 triumph Feb. 6. Young and Patenaude both had hat tricks, with Patenaude converting on a penalty shot for one of his tallies. Eric Benson scored a pair of goals and Player and Sarah Beaulieu netted one each.
Schumacher was in goal during the entire tourney and the two regular season matches.
