MAPLETON – Carl D. Lovley, 74, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on March 17, 2010, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born October 8, 1935, in Castle Hill, the son of Delance F. Lovley and Daphne (Richardson) Lovley. Carl was a 1953 graduate of Mapleton High School and attended the University of Maine at Orono. Carl’s dreams began to unfold in the spring of 1955, when he bought his first farm and married his high school sweetheart and classmate Emilie Chandler on June 7, 1955. Carl was a successful farmer for 40 years. His affiliations and service to the potato industry gave him the opportunity to travel the United States. He served as President of the Young Farmers Association; Board of Directors for Maine Potato Growers, Inc., 26 years; Director of Farm Credit, 9 years;  President and Director of Agricultural Bargaining Council; and a member of the Castle Hill Grange and Farm Bureau. Being a dedicated member of his community, Carl served the Town of Mapleton as Selectman, Assessor, Member of the Budget Committee and Planning Board; Director and Treasurer of TAMC; and Member of Aroostook River Snowmobile Club. After retiring in 1995, Carl dedicated many hours serving the Mapleton United Methodist Church. During his 55 years of membership, he contributed by serving as Chairman of Ad Council; Chairman of Trustees; Pastor-Parish Relations Committee; lay leader; choir member; and overseer of the parsonage renovation and garage construction. A man of initiative, Carl learned to swim, play golf, use the computer, and cook. His delicious beef stew and whoopie pies will be remembered by many. He also enjoyed restoring old farm tractors, woodworking, gardening, constructing  homes for Habitat for Humanity, and followed his grandchildren’s interests and sporting events.
