To the editor:
Several weeks ago I wrote a letter to both the Bangor Daily News and the Houlton Pioneer Times expressing my concerns about a Houlton town councilor, that in my opinion needed to step down.
First and foremost, this councilor seems like a nice enough guy, but his actions as a Houlton public official are what concern me. Secondly, the councilor had the opportunity to resign before this letter was even composed, but chose not to. Brian Donnelly stepped over the line when he made the decision to drink and drive. He was finally convicted of operating under the influence. This was not the only OUI he has on record.
I still believe it is time for Brian Donnelly to resign and put this matter to rest. In this country and state, we have far too much of this type of activity. Drinking is one thing, but driving and drinking is another. There is no way that one person could write about all the politicians that step over the line (that is where the newspapers and television help). In this case, it happened to be in our town and we can fight back, keeping Houlton better than those other places.
I believe this entire Houlton Town Council also has an obligation to the town and its people, and that is to address the problem and help restore Houlton’s image. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes.
In my opinion, the lack of respect from not stepping down tells me one thing, that Brian Donnelly should have never been put in as a candidate by Campaign 2008, whoever they are.
As a past councilor, and still an elected official for the town of Houlton, I still believe Houlton deserves better and we can do better.
