FORT FAIRFIELD – A strong crop of freshmen players could mean good things ahead for the Tiger varsity softball team.
Third-year coach Jamie Selfridge loves the team’s potential and says that with a lot of versatile players, “I anticipate a lot of movement with positions.”

The Tigers will rely heavily on senior catcher Courtney Churchill, who slammed six home runs last year to go along with numerous other extra-base hits and had a batting average of well over .400.
The starting pitcher is senior Sarah Hebert, who Selfridge said has increased her velocity while maintaining her consistent accuracy. Others who could contribute on the mound are freshmen Kellyn McGillan, Rebekah Pelkey and Kelsey Turner.
The starting infield includes first baseman Emily Weissman, sophomore second baseman Danielle Tracy, shortstop Turner and third baseman Camille Huffman. From left to right in the outfield are sophomore Amanda Hotham, freshman Sydney Churchill and McGillan.
The assistant coach is John McCrea, with Pelkey and freshman Emily Blaisell, sophomores Keegan Watt and Autumn Coombs and junior Amanda Holton providing depth for the Fort Fairfield squad.
Selfridge said the key to a successful 2010 season is unity.
“Playing as one team has been the focus for us,” she said. “Each player needs to fill their role, whatever that may be at the time, and play 100 percent all the time.
“If the effort is there, everything else will fall into place.”
The Tigers are scheduled to open their regular-season schedule Monday at 3:30 p.m. in Sherman Station against the Katahdin Cougars.
