85 years young and counting!
Special to the Star-Herald
A very special supper was enjoyed recently by over 200 guests, both friends and family, to celebrate the 85th birthday of Merle Wilcox. He was born in Wade in 1925, the son of William and Myrtie (Drost) Wilcox, and was married to Rebecca (Philbrook) Wilcox. Merle has three children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, making the Wilcox family a four-generation one.
The supper was given by Merle’s three children and their spouses, Mike and Betty Wilcox, Dave and Marie Wilcox, and Sylvia (Wilcox) and Richard Hebert. The menu featured beans and hotdogs, potato salad, rolls, coleslaw, desserts, coffee, tea and punch. The meals were served by family members including two young great-grandchildren, Gracie and Sarah Webster. Two cakes — one double chocolate and one white — made by Marie Thibeault, were served after the meal.
The event also included musical entertainment by members of two area bands: the Aroostook County Bluegrass, including members Helen Tompkins, Donna Turner and Dale Hudson; and the Good Ole Boys, with members Jo Duheme, Duane Anderson, Don Peters and a special member, 83-year-old Silas Gufstafson. Merle also joined the music with his specialty, a microphone and his ability to amazingly replicate the sound of a train whistle!
