Portage Lake ATV Club dedicates site

ASHLAND NEWS

by Susan Feeney-Hopkins

The Portage Lake ATV Club recently dedicated a site on the ATV trail in the memory of the late Kay and Ted St. Peter, who were both lifelong residents of Portage Lake. The spot known as “the overlook” sits atop their son Peter St. Peter’s land offering a panoramic view of the lake, most of the town and the mountainous horizons beyond. It is rightly one of the most scenic views in the area, not to mention the state.

Peter St. Peter has always been a very generous landowner sharing use of his land with his neighbors and the snowmobile club.
Initially this site was accessed only by snowmobile. The local ATV club recognized the splendor of the location and asked St. Peter to allow the use of the site for a route of travel for ATVs, as well. Thankfully he agreed, and now the site can be enjoyed during most seasons. The site can only be accessed by foot, ATV or snowmobile, and is well worth the effort.
There is a picnic table and fire ring for visitor use. As is expected, visitors are asked to carry out what they carry in, extinguish all fires completely, and to keep the area as serene and beautiful as they found it. Better yet, leave it better than you find it!
The ATV club marked the site with a personalized sign in the memory of St. Peter’s parents to “recognize and thank him for all he has done for us,” said club member Rena Belanger.
