To the editor:
September. It’s my favorite month of the year. The days are crispy, the leaves are changing colors, transforming into blazing hillsides, and the smell of potato dirt permeates the air.
But, being in the month of September also reminds me that November is right around the corner, and Election Day is November 2nd. Along with voting for a new Governor, you will be asked to vote for two positions on the City Council, and six members to serve on the Charter Commission, which will be formed shortly after the election.
Nationally, it appears that people seem to want a change, which is evident from the outcome of some of the primaries that have been held around the country. How about Caribou? Do you think we are better off now than we were, say 20 years ago? Or back when the charter was first formed, in 1967?
Not from my perspective, we aren’t. The only things I see growing in Caribou these days are taxes. I doubt we’ll ever be able to bring Caribou back to the way it was in its “heyday”. At least not in my lifetime, anyway. But maybe with new faces on the City Council, and the formation of a Charter Commission, Caribou can become the transparent, fiscally responsible, friendly community we strive for.
Whatever your convictions and philosophies are, I hope you will take the time to vote on Election Day. Know your candidates and what they stand for. Not everyone running for the Charter Commission believes we need a new charter in Caribou. And let me ask you once again, do you think Caribou is better off today than it was in 1967?
