Happy Losers
By Shirley Sides
The Happy Losers held their weekly meeting on Sept. 22 at the Congregational Church vestry in Island Falls.
Our leader opened the meeting with our pledge and roll call. We had 12 ladies weigh in and attend our meeting.
Loretta Bouchard was the loser of the week, and Mary Shaw was runner-up. Great job ladies.
Our weight losses have increased in the last few weeks after lots of picnics, weddings and funerals during the summer months. Reports were given by our secretary and treasurer for the week.
Our leader led the program for the week. We have been having quizzes of the which everyone can participate with the answers. Seems to be working well.
The Duchess team is winning so far in our contest, but the Cortlands are getting closer.
Please feel welcome to join our group on Wednesdays from 8-8:45 a.m. weigh-ins and meeting starts at 9 a.m. Call 365-4884 for more information.
Island Falls news
Recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Varney have been their daughter, Cheryl and husband, Ray Sandquist, from Humble, Texas. They spent a week at the Varney cottage on Mattawamkeag Lake, enjoying the fine weather and visiting friends and relatives before returning home.
Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster, have been in Island Falls recently visiting with Patti Hartin and Riva Hawkes before returning home to Caribou.
Nephew Ed Wood of Wilton, N.H., has been at the Woods camp on Mattawamkeag Lake for two weeks. While here he has begun work on the camp and also has done some kayaking and enjoying the nice weather for that.
Have finally taken in my hummingbird feeder and started cleaning my other feeders for the winter onslaught of hungry birds. Have nuthatches and chickadees and wrens already and an occasional blue jay. The other day I had two pileated woodpeckers busily pecking away at the cedar posts holding the fence around my blueberry bush. Have heard them from afar in the past but this was a good look at them. And, the doe and her two fawns are coming every few days to graze in the lower field, near the big tree I had cut down and where most of it is still laying. They just sort of skirted around it, looking it all over.
Patten Woman’s Club

Some members gave a presentation about living in early Patten. Our next meeting is at the Lumberman’s Museum in October.

TOPS ME 0233, Houlton
by Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly, Chapter 0233, of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, Sept. 24 meeting. Thirteen TOPS and three KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) were weighed. Maureen Bird was the loser of the week with Betty Ivey; runner-up was Melva Folsom.
The skinny dish was taken home by Donna Parent. Linda Bartlett led us in several minutes of exercises. We always look forward to these exercises. Joyce Estey, leader, spoke on the book, “The Choice is Mine.” She quoted several facts from the book being basic. Melva Folsom read a diet for eating and losing weight.
Maureen Bird had charge of the program, “Shake the Salt.” Maureen said that too much salt is not good for you and if we don’t cut back on its usage, we should. Too much salt in the diet is one cause of dementia. Maureen said 1500 grams a day is the correct number.
The fall rally will be Oct. 4 at Teddy’s Place in Presque Isle. A total of 15 ladies have signed up for the rally. If you need more information on the chapter, you may call Betty Ivey at 532-9653 or Charlotte Marley at 757-8483. The cutoff time for weigh-in is 8:45, not 7:45 as quoted in a previous column. Weigh-in time is at 8-8:45 with the meeting starting at 9 and usually ends an hour later. Come and join us.
