’Cat runners among contingent at Belfast

BELFAST – The Maine Cross Country Festival of Champions is generally considered the most anticipated meet of the regular season, and the Presque Isle cross country teams made the trip Saturday.
In the meet, held at the Troy Howard Middle School – the site of the Eastern Maine and state championship meets to be held later this month – the Presque Isle girls 28th out of 46 teams and the Wildcat boys were 34th out of 55. Teams from as far away as Connecticut, Rhode Island and Nova Scotia, Canada participated along with numerous Maine high schools.
Matt Eager led Presque Isle by placing 66th in 17:58.84. Teammate Logan Thibeau was 163rd with a 19:00.81 clocking.
In the girls’ race, Alecia Palmer of the Wildcats was 13th overall out of 561 who were registered for the race. Her time was 20:11.14. Next for PI was Emily Wright in 114th place in 22:31.2, with Jaylee Fox in 155th in 23:05.01.
The overall champions were, on the boys’ side, Matt McClintock of Madison in 16:06.07 and for girls, Abbey Leonardi of Kennebunk, who posted a course-record time of 17:58.35.

PRESQUE ISLE runners Matt Eager, top photo, and Jaylee Fox turned in solid performances at the Festival of Champions XC race Saturday. Eager was 66th in the boys race and Fox 155th among girls.
