MANCHESTER, NH – Janice M. Merrill, 72, of Manchester died February 14, 2011 at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester. She was born on August 1, 1938 in Houlton, ME the daughter of the late Hollis and Violet (Shannon) Bickford.
She was raised and educated in Houlton. Mrs. Merrill had lived in Hooksett for many years and spent the last two years at Villa Crest Nursing and Retirement Center.
In her younger years she worked on the farms harvesting potatoes and in the shoe factories. Later she worked in retail and was the head cashier at Toys R Us in Manchester for many years, where she was affectionately known as the “Boo Lady”.
She enjoyed birds, dancing and taking walks at the ocean. Her grandchildren were her life. She loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by four daughters, Lori Bridges of York Harbor, ME, Pamela Merrill of Manchester, Penney Race of Manchester and Theresa Siegler of Hillsboro; son, Kevin Bickford of Houlton; six grandchildren, one great -grandchild and her brother, Earl Bickford of Vernon, CT. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Merrill.
Calling hours were at the Phaneuf Funeral Home, 243 Hanover St., Manchester on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. Her funeral service was held in the funeral home chapel on Friday at 1 p.m. Donations in Janice’s name can be made to American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal Street, Manchester, NH 03101.
