Very special people caring for our loved ones

To the editor:

If we all took just a little piece of time to reflect on the privileges that come our way each day most of us would recognize there are special moments in nearly every day. For most of us each day has many of these moments.

My wife and I were driving north on I-95 this past week and enjoyed looking across toward Mt. Katahdin just as the sun was setting behind it. It was breathtaking and was certainly one of those special moments.

Then there are those very special moments we get to experience with family and friends. There are also the moments when we meet folks outside of family, some frequently some for the first time. It is that kind of privileged moment I got to experience and wanted to share.

This past week I met staff and administrators at both Presque Isle and Caribou Rehab & Nursing Centers and what an honor … what a privilege! They get to care for residents who have meant so much to you. Some of these folks have been providing care for residents for decades. I met still others who are now in their CNA training and are just beginning to recognize how special their caring role will be within your communities. I met with supervisors and was so impressed at their willingness to contemplate the challenges that come with changes in both the care environment and the culture around us.

I wanted to share that there was one resounding characteristic I saw in each group and in the overall attitude of these special places. That characteristic is the understanding that to be in the right place, at the right time, with the right knowledge, the right skills, along with the desire to make a difference in another person’s life is a real privilege … and it just doesn’t get any better that that. Coming north to your area always creates special moments for us whether it be for work or pleasure and working with these folks was a huge privilege.
