by Lois Downing
Houlton Council of Catholic Women met Sunday, April 3, after the celebration of the Holy Mass and Eucharist, in the parish center. Janet Barker, co-president, welcomed everyone including Deacon Albert Burleigh and Makala McGuire, granddaughter of Judy Reid.
Janet then led the group in traditional prayers and the luncheon was enjoyed. The food was supplied by the April committee, Judy Reid and Margaret Casey as chairmen. Each table was adorned with stuffed animals, courtesy of Judy Reid.
To get back to the meeting, reports were given by treasurer Bernette Roach, secretary Jane Stile and Lois Downing read correspondence. Money was set aside to buy new tables for the parish center and St. Anthony’s Hall. Members were generous with their donations for the animal shelter. Janet thanked everyone.
Discussion of chafing dishes resulted in a purchase by one of the members. A generous monetary gift was given to the Youth Ministry of St. Mary’s Church so members can attend their convention April 29-May 1. Janet Barker and Jane Stile will attend the Maine State gathering in Skowhegan April 30. If you wish to attend with them, please let either know. Easter flowers will be provided by Council. Three children will be receiving First Holy Communion at the Easter vigil. Council will help with the provisions for the reception.

Red Hat Border Belles
The Red Hat Border Belles have enjoyed two outings this week. On Tuesday, the Purple Hatters invited us to join them at the Oakfield Snowmobile Club. Charlotte Marley and her group prepared a wonderful Easter Buffet, colorful Easter decorations and detailed table favors. Entertainment included a unique “fashion show” and a comic skit performed by Doris Sherman. The afternoon was topped off with each guest picking an Easter egg which had a number inside that matched a wrapped gift. Gifts were also presented between the clubs which included an AnnaLee Collector Kitten adorned with her elegant Red Hat and specialty sugar pieces shaped into red and purple hats for that afternoon tea.
On Thursday, the Red Hatters gathered at the Courtyard Café for their regular monthly meeting. Birthdays for the month were acknowledged and since Lois Morin and Carolle Milliken were not present, the cards were mailed. Holders of winning tickets were Irene Jackson, Marge Pannell, Leola Bishop and Elva Coburn and each received a surprise gift.
The following attended one or both of the functions: Barbara Grant, Joyce Blake, Marge Melvin, Mapley Lindsey, Priscilla Monroe, Elva Coburn, Barbara Holston, Sara Regent, Arline Dickinson, Marge Pannell, Jean Wiley, Irene Jackson, Leola Bishop, Odette Ouellette, and Gemma Bartley.
Island Falls News
The sixth (and final) Lenten Breakfast was held April 17 at the Whittier Congregational Church. Don McKellar, who did the bacon and cooked the eggs and sausage for those attending, led this one. Assisting him was wife, Candy, who made the toast, Phil Faulkner, who cooked the blueberry pancakes, faithful waitress Marion Hoar and Verna Boone who helped with it all.
Homemade jelly was available as was syrup for the pancakes, along with orange juice and coffee. Good fellowship was much enjoyed during the breakfast and all are hoping it will be repeated next year. On Friday, April 22 there will be an Easter Egg Hunt held at the United Baptist Church at 2 p.m. There will be games, crafts and snacks, lots of eggs and lots of fun. This will be held rain or shine so come and enjoy.
On April 9 Owen Botting was guest of honor at a birthday party in honor of his 80th birthday given by his wife and family. Many, many people were there from the county, Southern Maine, Florida and New York. Cindy Webb, of Island Falls, made the birthday cake. Owen received many cards and gifts during this affair and thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.
I have been having a bit of trouble keeping a birdfeeder hanging on a branch of the cedar tree. Some hungry little animal has been chewing at the twine holding the feeder, it falls to the ground and the seeds are quickly eaten. I suspect it may be the gray squirrel I’ve seen trying to get at the hanging feeder. I have to keep the other feeders full so the little chickadees, wrens, junco and gold finch can have a lunch. I may buy myself a plastic tube feeder, which may discourage the gray squirrel.
For the past few days no deer have been in my area, at least where I can see them, but I am hoping they return soon to get their apples and bread. Snow has all but disappeared in my big back yard so I will be looking for the deer to come grazing.
