Twenty Caribou firefighters responded to a call received at 1:04 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, regarding a house fire at 21 Johnson Road in New Sweden.

According to Caribou Fire Chief Roy Woods the fire started upstairs in the one and one-half story home.

Several children (whose parents were not home) were outside at the time but were unaware of the fire,” said Woods. “It was when the parents arrived home that it was discovered and the call was made.”

Caribou firefighters were at the scene for one hour and 25 minutes, with four units, pumping 800 gallons of water to douse the fire. Woods stated the home suffered fire damage upstairs and some smoke and water damage downstairs.

Chief Woods said the cause of the fire was unknown but unattended smoking materials were suspected. He also stated there were no working smoke detectors or sprinklers.

The property, owned by Greg Easter, was insured.

Mutual aid to cover the Caribou station was provided by Presque Isle and Loring fire departments and firefighters from the North Lakes Fire Department assisted Caribou at the scene.

There were no injuries sustained.
