Houlton Majors lose close game on Monday

The Houlton 11-12-year-old Major League All-stars were eliminated from the District 3 Little League Tournament on Monday.
In Bangor, the major all-stars fell to Hermon, 2-1.
“It was a very well pitched game on both sides,” said all-star coach Shawn Graham.
    Nick Cowperthwaite pitched a complete game five hitter with 10 strikeouts. Hermon used three pitchers (Tyler Beaton, Zack Nash and Ryan Hoogterp) allowing five hits along with 11 strikeouts.
Houlton struck first when Cameron Graham singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Connor Grant.
Cowperthwaite then drove Graham in on a one-out double.
Hermon tied the game in the bottom of the second when Garrett Mullen was hit by a pitch, went to second on a passed ball and scored on  a two-out single by Hoogterp.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when Nash drew a one-out walk. He went to third on a ground ball fielder’s choice to shortstop and eventually scored on the errant throw to third base.
Cowperthwaite finished the game with two doubles, Grant also doubled for Houlton and Zack Hagan had a single.
Tyler Beaton lead Hermon with a double and two walks. Nash and Alex Shelly each singled while Matt Leach hit a third-inning double.
