PREQUE ISLE — The University of Maine Presque Isle women’s soccer team split a pair of matches over the weekend stopping Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday and falling to the University of Maine Farmington on Sunday afternoon. The men’s team went 0-2 on the weekend against the same schools.

Against the Mariners on Saturday Houlton native Lainey Herring provided all the scoring the Owls would need, finding the back of the net in both halves leading UMPI to a 2-0 win.
On Sunday UMPI dropped their first game of the year after being outplayed by Farmington, which held a 19-5 shots on goal advantage. The final score was 1-0.
The UMPI women next play on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the University of Maine Fort Kent. Game time is set for noon.
The UMPI men dropped two matches over the weekend. A controversial call in the UMPI Maine Maritime contest gave the Mariners a 2-1 overtime win.
About three minutes into OT the Mariners took a shot that deflected off the crossbar, appearing to come straight down. An official then ruled it did cross the goal line giving MMA the win.
UMPI’s lone goal was scored by Craig Maffei on a cross by Kyle Corrigan of Caribou.
On Sunday the University of Maine Farmington controlled play for much of the match and dropped the Owls 3-0.
The UMPI men will play again on Sept. 17 at the University of Maine Fort Kent at 2 p.m.
