Patrick, an 11-week-old orange tabby kitten, is ready and waiting for a new home. He has had two distemper shots, two wormings, a parasite prevention treatment and will leave Halfway Home Pet Rescue (HHPR) with a neuter voucher and is available for an adoption at a cost of $50. Patrick and about 15 other kittens will be at the Tractor Supply Store in Presque Isle on this Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will also be young spayed/neutered adult cats for adoption for only $25. “It does no good to save a pet and then not be able to place it in a home and we are determined that every HHPR pet shall be spayed and have good health when going home,” said HHPR President Norma Milton. There are cats throughout Aroostook County waiting for adoption, including two Siamese cats that have been abandoned by a cat hoarder; information regarding that pair can be obtained by contacting the PAWS organization in Fort Kent. As The County has an abundance of stray cats in need of adoption, HHPR volunteers have expressed their thanks to the community for donations of Purina Kitten Chow to the shelter. Shelter volunteers aren’t the only ones looking for food donations for the animals; the free pet food pantry is managed by HHPR volunteer Julie Dambois, who also fosters particularly shy kittens and creates the gift baskets that go home with every HHPR adopted cat. HHPR does have many dedicated volunteers, like Colleen Murphy of Caribou who transports cats back and forth to the Presque Isle Animal Hospital for surgeries. HHPR official were also pleased to announce that Home Farm Kennels will assist the shelter by providing foster home services or nursing mother cats with young babies. The change collection jars throughout town and returnable bottles at the Bennett Drive redemption center have been the financial foundation of the shelter’s medical program. HHPR is a 501c3 non-profit, state licensed animal shelter at 11 Pioneer Avenue in Caribou; additional information can be obtained by contacting the shelter at 492-1722 or visiting www.halfwayhomepetrescue.org.
