Drug cases top grand jury indictments

The Aroostook County grand jury completed its fourth session of 2011 on Sept. 9, handing down 39 indictments against 39 individuals.
District Attorney Todd R. Collins noted that 13 cases directly involve drugs and/or alcohol as the basis of the criminal charge. While not directly involving illicit drugs, substances, and/or alcohol abuses, many of the remaining cases involve substance abuse or other drug-seeking behavior.
Eleven cases, Collins said, are violent offenses against other people; the most serious of which involve “sexual assaults” or crimes that involve illegal conduct of a sexual nature.
“It is important to note that although the sexual assaults appear to have some age to them, that is the offense dates can go back several months and/or years, that such a ‘delay’ in reporting a sexual crime does not diminish the credibility of a victim in any way. The vast majority of sexual crimes create in a victim so many conflicting emotions from fear to anger to shame that cause an overwhelming sense of confusion mixed with competing obligations to family members or ‘family harmony’ and more often than not a strong desire to not deal with the negative consequences of being a victim of a sexual assault that ‘ignoring it’ becomes the most viable option,” Collins added.
This month there were no felony driving offenses not directly related to alcohol or illegal use of drugs brought forward for indictment by the Aroostook County grand jury. Among those indicted were:
