HOULTON — Have you ever heard the words, “I have to tell you there is cancer in your body?” Or maybe it was one of your loved ones who received the terrible news? You are the outsider looking in and how will you deal with this?
This is what Den Morton of Gorham spoke about when he visited with the United Methodist Church in Houlton. Morton, who was diagnosed with cancer, was a guest speaker at the church, using this topic and his personal experiences as the subject matter.
“This is a huge problem for both the patient and those close to the patient,” Morton said. “How do I tell my mother? How will she respond? Can my wife handle the situation and who is there to help?”
As part of his visit to Houlton, Morton helped the church form a cancer prayer and support group. The group will be open to the community and be led by cancer survivor Dr. Donald Woods and his wife Helen. The Woods would like to meet with any cancer patient or anyone who has survived cancer, as well as those who are close to cancer patients.
The group will meet the first Tuesday of each month from 6:30-8 p.m. at the United Methodist Church at the corner of Military and School streets. The meetings are open to any who are interested to know how others have faced this medical diagnosis. For more information, call the church at 532-2632.
