To the editor:
We have a summer camp in Orient and do not live there full time. We, as property-owning taxpayers don’t get to vote in Orient town politics. I thought taxation without representation was illegal?
The taxes on our camp increased 75 percent in 2008. This year they increased 92 percent. Of concern is the lack of government notification to the public in setting the mill rate and the decision to increase taxes. It is my understanding the local government officers held an unannounced meeting (which is illegal) and made the decision to raise taxes.
The tax bill itself has several errors. The postmark on my tax bill envelope is Oct. 4, 2011. However, the bill states my payment is due Sept. 30, 2011. This is four days before the town sent the bills. The bill further states if I pay my bill by Nov. 14, 2010 (a year ago) I will get a 20 percent discount.
The property valuations are suspect. The last valuator, Marybeth Foley charged the town $30,000 to valuate Orient properties. A job she never finished. Also, Foley was an Orient Selectman at the time she made herself valuator. I believe this to be a conflict of interest if not outright illegal.
I urge you to look into the Orient town government and write the story.
