Washburn girls off to flying start in soccer
The Washburn girls soccer team is off to another solid start with victories over Easton, Central Aroostook and Wisdom to begin the campaign.

The Beavers’ latest victory was over Wisdom at home Monday, 7-0. Mackenzie Worcester had a hat trick, while Kennedy Churchill, Tyra Shaw, Joan Overman and Mikayla Churchill put in one goal apiece for Washburn.
The team also recorded a 7-2 win over the Bears last Wednesday before nipping the Panthers Friday, 2-1.
Against Easton, Worcester tallied four goals and assisted on another as Washburn won big. Kennedy Churchill, Overman and Shaw also scored goals for the Beavers and Rayah Saucier made four saves on 13 shots for the win in goal.
Carla Halvorson and Kylee Carter registered Easton’s goals, while Hannah Ferris saved seven of 25 shots in goal.
In the win over CA, Worcester and Maegan Fitzpatrick had goal each to provide the offense the Beavers’ needed. Karli Levesque scored the Panthers’ only goal.
The Washburn boys won their first two games over both Easton and CA, but were beaten by Wisdom Monday, 4-3.
In the loss, Shane Chamberland scored twice and Evan Esancy notched the game-winning goal with 6:30 to play to lift the Pioneers. Mitchell Worcester was the goalie to begin the game for Washburn, but was later shifted onto the field and ended up with a pair of goals. Cameron Bragg had the other tally. Worcester and Jarrett Olson combined for 12 saves for the Beavers.
The Beavers doubled up on Central Aroostook Friday, 2-1, behind second-half goals from Worcester and Alex Pelletier. Nick Bragg earned the assist on Worcester’s goal. Steven Decker scored on a penalty kick to give the Panthers the early 1-0 lead.
In Easton’s 2-1 loss to Washburn last Wednesday, Sotomayor scored on a breakaway in the first half for the Bears’ lone goal. Noah Caron scored the equalizer for the Beavers before Worcester broke the tie with a goal off a Carter Doak assist 14 seconds into overtime.
The Wisdom boys were also on the road Saturday and bested Easton, 5-2. Esancy scored twice to lead the Pioneers, while Cody Halvorson and Drew Sotomayor were the goal scorers for the Bears, while teammate and goalkeeper Jared Hafford saved 12 of 22 shots in the loss.
On the girls’ side, Easton trounced Wisdom Saturday, 13-1, with Mariah Cyr scoring four times to lead the charge. Carter had three goals and three assists and Halvoron had two goals and two assists for the winners. Emma Bonner was the other Bear player with multiple goals, scoring twice. Easton outshot the Bears 45-10 in the contest.
The Presque Isle girls opened their season in style Friday, shutting out Fort Kent in a road game, 3-0. Chandler Guerrette scored a goal and set up two others to pace the ’Cats. Katelyn McPherson and Hannah Graham posted a goal each for the defending Eastern Maine Class B champions. Meredith Stewart and Jillian Flynn combined to record the shutout in goal with only one save on three shots.
The Ashland teams opened their regular season last Wednesday with games against the Pioneers in St. Agatha. The Hornets gained a sweep, with the boys winning, 2-1, and the girls rolling to a 9-0 victory.
Mark Chasse and Tyler Chasse scored a goal each in the boys’ win. Jake Lizotte notched Wisdom’s lone goal.
Marissa Chasse totaled six goals to power the Hornet girls to the shutout win. Savannah Flint scored twice in her varsity debut and Kayla Cote had the team’s other goal. Macie Bellanceau turned away four of six shots for the win in goal.
Last Tuesday, the Madawaska boys held CA scoreless in a 3-0 win. Ian Lee scored all three goals for the Owls, who outshot the Panthers, 28-3.
The Madawaska girls held off CA that same day, 3-2. Shannon Blanchette scored twice to lead the Owls, while Levesque netted both Panther goals.
