Make-A-Wish Foundation looking for County volunteers

PORTLAND — Make-A-Wish Maine depends on volunteers living across Maine to help make magical, memorable wishes come true for children who live with life-threatening medical conditions. Children provide the inspiration; volunteers provide the passion.

Make-A-Wish is currently seeking wish-granting volunteers in Aroostook and Penobscot counties to help make wishes come true.

Wish granters are a specially trained group of volunteers who maintain direct contact with the wish children and their families, working as a liaison between the family and the staff to fulfill each child’s dream. Wish granters work in teams of two and most wish granters complete one or two wishes per year. There is no financial responsibility. All expenses are paid by Make-A-Wish.

Wish granting volunteers must be at least 21 years old and must attend a one-day training. The next training will be on Nov. 3 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bangor from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Any Maine child who is between the ages of 30 months and 18, has a life-threatening medical condition that is confirmed by their doctor and has never had a wish granted before is eligible for a wish. Make-A-Wish does not choose between children. Every child that meets eligibility criteria is granted his or her greatest wish.
