115 Years Ago-Dec. 2, 1897
• On Wednesday, the first regular train of the Aroostook Northern Railroad hauled out of the Caribou yard on time, consisting of two passenger and five freight cars. Jerry Donnelly was the obliging gentleman passing through cars calling, “tickets please.” Arthur Fuller occupied the right hand side of the engine, Ephriam Bulmer fed the locomotive, Alex Mann performed duties of baggage master and Jack Gallagher those of brakeman.
• Earl Rackliffe, with a score of 115, won the pipe given to the person securing the highest number at the game of candle pins at C. P. Hussey’s bowling parlor during November.

Baptist church burns — About 8:30 o’clock on Sunday evening, fire broke out in the Fort Fairfield Free Baptist Church. After a hard struggle, the flames were subdued, but not until the building was pretty nearly a wreck. The church was practically new, having been erected but a few years ago.

Boxing season opens — The local boxing season will open with a bang at the P. of H. Opera House, Thursday, Dec. 9 with a series of stellar bouts offered for the entertainment of the fans. The main bout features the “battle of the century,” the fourth meeting between Maxie Holmes of Fort Fairfield and Louis (Kid) Michaud of this town.
More milk — At the Institute on Nutrition held at the Caribou High School, over 35 people enjoyed the instructive talks and general discussion of nutrition. Two definite conclusions derived were that more milk was needed in the diet, and whole wheat bread in place of cream of tartar biscuits.

Stop Polio Sunday — Dr. Thomas G. Harvey of Caribou, who is heading the anti-polio drive for the Aroostook Medical Society, has announced the second Stop Polio Sunday will be held on Dec. 2. This Sunday’s clinic will be like that of Oct. 15 in that Sabin oral vaccine will be administered.
Sinclair couple mark 50th — Mr. and Mrs. Peter Powers of Sinclair were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary by sons-in-law and daughters Mrs. and Mrs. Paul Emile Michaud of Fort Kent, Mr. and Mrs. John Schoonamaker of New York, Mrs. and Mrs. Louis Parent of Van Buren, and a sister-in-law Mrs. Pat Powers of Presque Isle.

Angels for sale — Volunteers from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Aroostook will be at Shop ‘n Save stores on Dec. 4 and 5, as part of the “Be an Angel, Buy a Pocketful of Angels Program.” The angel Christmas decorations are made by the volunteers in support of Pineland and Barron Centers.
Hockey does exist — Hockey does exist in the County even if it isn’t yet on the high school level. Youth hockey, on the 7 – 12 age level exists at The Forum, and for the older player, there’s the non-checking Gentlemen’s Hockey League. The four teams in this league are, Dominoes, NMVTI, Loring Air Force Base and DMA Trucking.
