The Southern Aroostook Community School Civil Rights team commemorated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by promoting unbiased behavior and reading a daily morning quote.
The team wanted to bring more appreciation to the actions of King and what he did for civil rights in our nation. During the week, the team gave ideas for students to use to help promote civil rights and unbiased behavior, focusing this week on race and national origin.

They encouraged certain ideas for each day, such as complimenting someone, talking to someone you normally wouldn’t talk to and committing a random act of kindness.
“The students are positively participating,” said a junior at SACS.
Another said, “The students have taken notice and are gradually using it [the certain ideas promoted by the Civil Rights Team] in their school routine.”
During lunch period on Jan. 25, a video of King’s “I Have A Dream” Speech was shown.
The team hopes to get people thinking about their actions and the effect they have, whether positive or negative.
