Entire Relay crowd deserving of ‘Best Team Spirit’ Award

Team representatives and Aroostook Relay for Life organizers met on Monday night for a wrap-up meeting and shored up the votes for award categories.
Voted on by their peers were the distinction of Best On-Site Fundraiser, Best Decorated Campsite, and Best Team Spirit.

Relay for Life participants aren’t known for giving up when things get tough, that’s why when thunderstorms forced the all-night event indoors for a few hours, participants took to the dance floor including, at left, Christy Sirois of St. Agatha.

“The Best Team Spirit Award was voted on and given to all of Relay for Life for persevering through the rain,” said Aroostook Relay Co-Coordinator Julie Tucci.
Winning Best Decorated Campsite for bringing pretty much a house to the fundraiser were members of Pelletier’s Property Service, and Butterflies for Hope had the best On-Site Fundraiser for their awesome breakfast served up during the pre-dawn hours of Relay.
Other top awards didn’t require voting, as the fundraising spoke for itself. The top fundraiser was McCain Foods, the top non-profit was the UMPI Owls and the top community fundraiser was Butterflies for Hope.
The May 31 event held at the Caribou High School raised over $147,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Taking the Caregivers’ Lap hand-in-hand during the annual Aroostook Relay for Life on May 31 were Nancy Holmquist and Nason Donahue, of New Sweden.     Clearly happy to have more time to spend together, Tia and Sherry Cowett walked the Cargivers’ Lap hand-in-hand during the May 31 Relay for Life.

Everyone cheered when little Ashlynn Rose Martin opened up Relay for Life by singing the National Anthem on May 31 in the gym of the Caribou High School. Ashlynn’s mom, Erica, provided moral support for the young vocalist and Ashlynn’s music teacher Jenna Hartung sang backup for encouragement. Upon completing the song, Ashlynn gave Hartung an enthusiastic high-five.
