Campbell discussed a variety of ongoing service projects that they are doing regarding literacy along with a few from the past and some for the future.

Otis Smith is the Houlton Rotary Club Literacy Chairperson. One of the big points for the Presque Isle Rotary Club is reading to children in their classroom and handing out books. They give out approximately 150 “A First Thesaurus,” books.

BU-CLR-Rotary-dcx-pt-36GUEST SPEAKER — Sharon Campbell of the Presque Isle Rotary Club was the guest speaker at the Houlton Rotary Club Monday, Aug. 26. At Monday’s meeting are, from left, Scott White RSU 29 school board director and past president of Houlton Rotary Club; Otis Smith, Adult Education Director and Houlton Rotarian; Campbell; and Amy Hocking, vice president Houlton Rotary Club.

Campbell shared a comical story from her child learning new words using this book. This past year, the Presque Isle Rotary joined with a Rotary Club in Kingston, Jamaica where they had pen pals and collaboratively chose a service project to do. This year, with all the new technology, they are going to be doing this with Skype. It is great to get kids excited about reading and to teach them about Rotary.
In the past, the Houlton Club has hosted author Tim Caverly and donated many books over the years to Cary Library and local schools. We look forward to doing more and more. It is up for discussion of how we can include some of the adults that struggle in this area as well. Otis would love to hear any suggestions that the community may have, you can contact him by email at otsmith@rsu29,org.
