Maddy and Nick Staples are active members of the Halfway Home Pet Rescue youth volunteers.  “Maddy is close to finishing her Caribou High School 60-hour community service volunteer work, but that will not stop her from continuing to give her whole heart into caring for these HHPR cats/kittens,” said President of the Halfway Home Pet Rescue Norma Milton. “In fact, the entire Staples family volunteers — including cousins and their parents, Donna and Dean Staples.”

Milton said that the family enjoys helping out at the shelter with feeding, cleaning and loving the cats in need. Dean Staples, of Staples Construction, has also offered his assistance in moving the most heavy equipment for the new Adoption Center. After helping with the pet care at the 489 Main St. Adoption Center, the family comes to 11 Pioneer Ave., to give affection and support to the eight young males and three females due for spaying and neutering at the Presque Isle Animal Hospital. Milton said that HHPR volunteers are happy to involve the Caribou Teen Group for community service, but quickly educate the young people on how rescuing cats is not all play — there are many hours of cleaning, scrubbing and feeding with hope that at the end of the work cycle, there will be enough time for hugs and kisses. All adult cats over 6 months are on special during the rest of September for only $25. These cats are spayed/neutered and have all their medical procedures up to date For more information on volunteering, call Mary at 999-1075 or complete a volunteer application on the website www.halfwayhomepetrescue.org.
