Maine State Police stopped Matthew Sands, 31, of Caribou, on Saturday night while driving this semi-truck, which was reported stolen.

VAN BUREN — A Caribou man has been arrested and charged with a number of motor vehicle violations after being stopped on Saturday night driving a semi-truck that was reported stolen.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 25, officers of the Van Buren Police Department requested assistance from surrounding agencies to look for a blue 2013 Volvo bob-tail truck tractor stolen from their town that same evening; the vehicle was believed to be traveling south from Van Buren. About 80 minutes later, at approximately 12:50 a.m. on Jan. 26, Maine State Trooper Rob Flynn encountered the vehicle on Route 1 in Caribou and initiated a stop.
As a result of the stop, 31-year-old Matthew Sands of Caribou was arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, operating after suspension and other motor vehicle offenses. Van Buren Police Department remained the primary investigating agency on the motor vehicle theft, while State Police made the vehicle recovery and addressed the criminal traffic-related conduct.
The 2013 Volvo truck tractor belongs to Vaillancourt Transport and is valued at $120,000.
