DYER BROOK, Maine — Jonathan Porter, principal at Southern Aroostook Community School, has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2015. Cassidy Lyn Lyons has been named valedictorian, while Matthew B. Tarr has been selected as salutatorian; Jessica Jean Nye as first honor essayist; and Kylie Ann Dunphy as second honor essayist.
Cassidy Lyn Lyons
Valedictorian
Lyons, the daughter of Richard and Terri Lyons, is a member of the National Honor Society. She has been active throughout high school in basketball, softball and soccer. She was chosen as a senior all-star in basketball and received All-Aroostook in soccer as well.
Lyons also received the Scholar Athlete award. She has held various class officer positions. She was the recipient of the Maine Principals’ Award and also received the Phi Betta Kappa award and was a Girls State delegate. She received various achievement awards in math, science, Spanish and placed first in the Science Fair.
Lyons has also been a member of the Houlton School of Dance for many years and has also taken piano lessons. She plans to attend Husson University in the fall, entering into their six-year physical therapy program.
Matthew B. Tarr
Salutatorian
Tarr is the son of Susie Tarr and Chris Tarr. He is a member of the National Honor Society and also yearbook staff. He has been class president for his class all four years of high school and has been vice-president of the Student Council. Tarr was chosen as a Boys State delegate to attend a week long program and he also attended Maine Youth Leadership conference.
Tarr was chosen to receive Student of the Quarter by staff and student body. Tarr’s co-curricular activities include varsity soccer (four years), junior varsity basketball (two years), drama, and Dollars for Scholars. He has taken college courses through the Aspirations Program.
Tarr plans to attend Thomas College in the fall for business management.
Jessica Jean Nye
First Honor Essayist
Nye is the daughter Linda Nye and James Nye. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been active in Dollars for Scholars. She has helped with the “Share the Warmth” clothing drive. She was nominated by staff and students for the Student of the Quarter award; has been a class officer; and has been on the honor roll throughout high school.
Nye was also a Girls State alternate, and chosen for the Maine Youth Leadership conference and attended the Rotary luncheon. She has been active in athletics, participating in varsity softball (three years), varsity girls soccer (four years) and varsity basketball (one year). She was chosen All-Aroostook for soccer.
Nye was also a member of the Varsity Club and Yearbook. She has been employed at A Place To Eat for two years. She will attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle this fall studying business administration with a concentration in management and leadership.
Kylie Ann Dunphy
Second Honor Essayist
Dunphy is the daughter of Scott and Carol Dunphy. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was also a representative of Dirigo Girls State. Dunphy was a member of the varsity girls soccer team. She received awards in creative writing and history.
Dunphy was chosen by staff and students for Student of the Quarter her junior year. She enjoys taking guitar lessons and doing Yoga. Dunphy will attend the University of Maine at Machias, majoring in environmental studies.
