Picking Wage Set — The potato picking wage for the 1940 season was set at 5.5 cents per barrel with board and 7 cents per barrel without board by a special committee after balloting by farmers at the Aroostook County Farm Bureau outing in Presque Isle yesterday.
Rally Next Tuesday — As complete coverage of Aroostook towns as it is possible to make in three days is contemplated in the Whirlwind Tour of Republican Candidates, which starts Monday, August 12 from Caribou and ends Wednesday night, the 14th, at Houlton, according to announcement to the itinerary made public this week by E. Esters, chairman of the Aroostook County Republican Committee.

Two Survive Wreck — Two young Hampden men narrowly escaped death in a burning car wreck in Caribou early Tuesday morning, not far from the spot on 1A where a two-car collision claimed two lives Friday afternoon.
Cary Board Seeks — The proposed expansion program for Cary Memorial Hospital in Caribou could cost $838,000, with the town contributing half of this figure under a local-federal equal participation plan set forth by the board of directors of the institution.

Pot Bust — Acting on an informant’s tip, Aroostook County law enforcement officials seized approximately 600 marijuana plants, growing equipment and a hand grenade from an abandoned Easton farmhouse last week.
