1900 to 1990: Potatoes at the forefront

115 Years Ago  — 1900

     Due to the temperatures reaching 100 degrees, potatoes are rotting badly.  Many reports of half-crops have reached us.

100 Years Ago  — September 9, 1915
The boys of the Caribou High School have organized their football team for 1900.  The officers elected were George Calkins, manager; Fred Roberts, treasurer; Fred Doyle, captain.  They expect to play several games with other schools this year.

     Knights of the road — Four “knights of the road” were rounded up last week by Chief of Police H. H. Noiles and placed in the cooler.  Too severe justice cannot be meted out to this worthless class of citizens.

     Caribou fair closed — Caribou’s second annual fair closed Friday, having been postponed one day from Wednesday on account of the inclement weather.  The weather kept away thousands who had planned to attend.

75 Years Ago  — September 5, 1940

     Air Show — Plans are now underway for the fourth annual Caribou Lions Club air show to be held at the municipal airport Sunday, September 22.  The event staged yearly by the local clubs is sponsored for raising funds to assist needy Caribou boys and girls.

50 Years Ago  — September 9, 1965

     Destroyed in fire — Four potato houses went up in flames in an $80,000 outbreak on the west side of the Aroostook River in Caribou Saturday night.  Three of the buildings devoured by the fire were owned by Louis Solman and the fourth by Mrs. Robert Patten.  The Soloman buildings were valued at $50,000 and suffered a $20,000 loss in equipment.

     Population drain– The 1990 census showed that the population in Maine increased by 8.3 percent over the past decade while Aroostook County experienced the sharpest decline, with an 8 percent loss in population, or a preliminary count of 84,423.
