First ski meet of winter slated in Caribou

It will be an active night for high school sports Wednesday, with the first ski meet of the season scheduled in Caribou and several basketball games and a wrestling meet also on the docket.

The ski meet at Caribou High School will include all the Aroostook County Nordic teams and the freestyle technique will be used. The start time is 3 p.m.

In basketball, Fort Fairfield travels to Ashland for a girls’ and boys’ doubleheader. The girls’ game will begin at 5 p.m. and the boys play at 6:30 p.m. The Tiger girls are 2-2 and the Hornets are 3-1. The Fort Fairfield boys hold a 3-1 mark and Ashland is 0-4.

Easton also hosts a twinbill against Van Buren. The girls tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 7 p.m. The Bear girls have opened with three consecutive losses and the Crusaders enter with a 2-1 record. The Easton boys are 2-2 and Van Buren is currently 1-3.

The Hodgdon boys travel south to Stacyville to take on Katahdin at 7 p.m. The Hawks (3-2) are looking to rebound from Monday’s tough loss to Woodland, while Katahdin (1-2) hopes to get back to a .500 record. The Cougars have not played since Saturday.

Fort Kent (2-1) makes the trip to Washburn (0-4) for a boys’ game that begins at 7 p.m. The Warriors own victories over Wisdom and Fort Fairfield and their only loss was at Caribou.

The Viking boys are also heading south to take on Houlton at 7 p.m. The Vikings (2-1) are looking to extend their two-game winning streak, but will have a tough matchup with the Shires (3-1). Houlton is coming off a lopsided 79-35 victory over Southern Aroostook on Monday.

In wrestling, Caribou is back on the road for a meet at Calais High School that starts at 6 p.m. Other schools participating are Ellsworth and Washington Academy. The Vikings are sporting an 0-3 record in dual meets so far this season.

Results from Tuesday night’s games are as follows:

Caribou girls 53, Houlton 65 — At Houlton, the Shiretowners jumped to a 17-5 first quarter lead and maintained the upper hand throughout the game. Senior Kolleen Bouchard sparked Houlton (2-0) with 23 points, 15 rebounds, nine assists and seven blocked shots. Senior Aspen Flewelling posted 21 points (including three 3-pointers) and eight rebounds. Sophomore Teagan Ewings scored 10 points, while sophomore Abbie Worthley and senior Kristen Graham each had five points.

Caribou (1-3) was led by Gabrielle Marquis with 17 points, while Paige Espling netted 15 points and Taylor Labreck added nine points.

Houlton led 17-5, 28-18 and 48-36 at the quarter breaks.

Southern Aroostook girls 70 Katahdin 26 — At Stacyville, the Warriors improved to 4-0 on the season with the commanding win over Katahdin. With the loss, the Cougars dropped to 1-3 on the season. Individual results were not reported.
