Shire boys top Vikings in Wednesday clash

Only one sports contest is scheduled for Thursday that involves teams in the region, and it takes place up in the St. John Valley.

The Washburn and Fort Kent girls will square off Thursday at 7 p.m. Both teams hold 2-1 records. The Class D Beavers have beaten Van Buren and East Grand and lost to Madawaska, while the Class C Warriors defeated both Wisdom and Fort Fairfield and fell to Caribou.

Summaries from Wednesday’s slate of games follow:

Boys basketball

Houlton 43, Caribou 25 — At Houlton, a slow start by both squads resulted in a low-scoring affair with both teams scoring well below their season averages. Coming into Wednesday’s contest, the Shires averaged 70.5 points per game, while Caribou averaged 47.

Caribou (2-2) led the Shires 9-5 at the end of the first quarter, as Houlton (4-1) did not break the scoring ice until nearly 5 minutes had ticked off the clock. Houlton outscored the Vikings 9-2 in the second period to take a 14-11 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Shires led 24-18 after three periods.

Houlton senior Cameron Cleary racked up 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks to spark the Shiretowners to victory. Keegan Gentle chipped in 11 points and Nick Brewer added nine for Houlton.

Parker Deprey and Austin Findlen paced Caribou with five points each.

Katahdin 60, Hodgdon 43 — At Stacyville, the host-Cougars outscored Hodgdon 22-5 in the fourth quarter to break open what had been a tight game. The Cougars (2-2) were led by Hunter Craig with a game-high 21 points, while Brody Guiggey netted 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. John McNally added 11 points and Cooper Drew collected 14 rebounds.

Hodgdon (3-3) was led by Josh Foster with 16 points and Josh Palmer with 12 points.

Hodgdon led 16-15 at end of the first quarter and 28-26 at halftime, before the Cougars knotted the game at 38-38 after three periods.

Fort Fairfield 50, Ashland 18 — Nine Tigers scored, led by Jared Harvey’s 14 points, as the visitors kept the Hornets winless on the season. Fort Fairfield was up 22-0 at the end of the first quarter and 34-2 at halftime.

Liam McNamee scored nine points and Isaac Cyr added seven for Fort Fairfield, now 4-1 on the season. Baily Clark’s seven points paced 0-5 Ashland.

Easton 59, Van Buren 28 — The host Bears outscored the Crusaders 14-4 in the second quarter to open up a big lead en route to their fourth win against two losses.

Freshman Camden Michaud headed a well-balanced attack with 12 points to lead the winning offense. Collin Sotomayor was also in double figures with 10 points and Noah Hanscomb added eight. Six other players scored points for Easton.

Luc Perreault scored a game-high 18 points to pace Van Buren (1-4).

Fort Kent 108, Washburn 16 — The Warriors improved to 3-1 and the Beavers fell to 0-5 following the game held in Fort Kent. Game details and individual stats were not reported.

Girls basketball

Fort Fairfield 33, Ashland 28 — The Tigers led at all the quarter breaks in the defense oriented game played at Ashland. Sadie Edgecomb paced Fort Fairfield with 10 points.

Amber Chasse scored 10 points to lead the Hornets. Both teams are now 3-2 on the season.

Easton 56, Van Buren 29Isabelle Morin tossed in 20 points to help the Bears beat the Crusaders in Easton.

Delaney Leach scored 14 points for Easton, which picked up its first win after starting 0-3.

Tiffany Morrow led Van Buren (2-2) with 12 points and Emma LaJoie scored 10.
