BELFAST, Maine — More than 50 active and retired educators from around the state recently gathered at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast for a “STRETCH your Teaching” workshop sponsored by Alpha Psi State Maine of Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) International, professional organization of women educators.

Alpha Psi State President Elaine Hendrickson of Presque Isle helped DKG members to plan the day-long program which, she said, “was designed to provide opportunities for teachers from all corners of Maine to stretch their thinking, learn new ideas to implement in their classrooms, and collaborate with colleagues.”

Keynote speaker Sylvie Bastien-Doss of Quebec, a well-known educator and international speaker, shared her expertise in education, communications, public relations and school management.

“In a highly entertaining presentation, Sylvie Bastien-Doss took us on a journey to discover personality dynamics in a school environment,” said Hendrickson.

“Participants learned how to communicate with each personality style, how to prevent conflict, and how to approach colleagues or parents peacefully and efficiently,” she said. “The session included positive and productive communication tips that help to create the best possible workplace atmosphere in our schools.”

Lisa Dow, grade 8 science and math teacher at Presque Isle Middle School, presented a workshop session “Interactive Math and Science.”

Other breakout sessions, led by professionals from around the state, included teaching compassion in the classroom, digital literacy, Germany today, autism strategies, math Ninja and massage relaxation techniques.

Attendees received 5.5 contact hours toward teacher recertification.

Hendrickson said Alpha Psi hopes to offer more professional development events, and invites interested teachers to visit alphapsimaine.com for updates.
