Mapleton Rec concludes session with celebration

Last Thursday, the Mapleton Recreation Department concluded its summer activities.  A big event of the afternoon was the championship game between Buck Construction and Doyen Farms.  The game was well attended by parents and supporters of the two teams, with Buck Construction winning.

After the game a huge potluck picnic was held with Mapleton Lions Tim Graham and Steve Hanning grilling red hot dogs supplied by the club for all who attended.

Following the dinner, Mapleton Recreation Director Jake Graham recognized all the children, volunteers and staff who made this year’s programs enjoyable, including summer dance, tennis, coach pitch/T-ball, basketball, swimming and six Little League teams.

The Doyen Farms team members received runner-up medallions and the Buck Construction Team won first-place trophies.  Home run balls were presented to Dawson Beaulieu, Evan “Chappy” Chapman, Jack Boone, Benjamin Beaulieu, Wyatt Young, Max Graves, Kamron Tardiff and Cooper Boinske.

Each Little League team was challenged to collect as many boxes of cereal to be used in the Summer Gap Feeding Program.  The teams collected a total of 700 boxes of cereal. The first-place team was Doyen Farms, who collected over 370 boxes — more than half of the total boxes collected.  The team received the traveling Cereal Bowl Trophy and will have its name inscribed on a plaque that will hang in the town office.

Sherry Locke, executive director of the United Way of Aroostook, said, “This cereal will be distributed through the Summer Gap Feeding Program, a collaborative between United Way of Aroostook, The Aroostook Medical Center, City of Presque Isle and Presque Isle Housing.”

Starting Aug. 13, the collaborative will provide free lunch to elementary and middle school students in MSAD 1 to fill the gap between the summer feeding program of MSAD #1 and August 31. They will pack bags at the Community Center and then distribute them at the center, Birch Street, Carmichael Street, Helen Noreen Apartments and Mapleton Town Office. The cereal will also be distributed.

School Open house

Parents of children who will be attending Mapleton Elementary School are invited to the school’s Open House to visit their child’s classroom as well as tour the school before the school year begins.  Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the open house on Aug. 29.

There will be two cookie and juice gatherings for pre-K and Kindergarten students and their parents. The Morning session gathering will be from 5 to 6 p.m. and the afternoon session gathering is from 6 to 7 p.m.

The Open House for grades 1-5 will be the same day from 6 to 7 p.m. All parents and students in these grades are invited.

Fiddlers to Play

The Wednesday Evening Fiddlers will return to Mapleton in August. The Haystack Historical Society will host the fiddlers at the Mapleton Lions Hall Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.  At last year’s concert, the hall was filled to near overflow capacity by spectators

Frequently the group consists of 20 or more musicians who meet regularly on Wednesday Evenings and enjoy playing music together.

Donations will be accepted and split between the Haystack Historical Museum and the Mapleton Lions Club. Homemade cookies, brownies and soda will be on sale to benefit the museum.

Meet the pilots

On Saturday morning, Aug. 25, the Chapman Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club will host a pancake breakfast at their clubhouse, 94 Town Hall Road, Chapman.  The public can meet the pilots taking part in this year’s Crown of Maine Balloon Festival and ask questions about the pilots’ flying experiences and how their hot air balloons work.

Breakfast will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. and is open to the public. The menu includes: pancakes, beans, bacon/sausage, fruit, muffins, juice, coffee.  The cost is $8 per adult, $3 for ages 6-11 and free for those under 6.

Soccer Sign-up

The Mapleton Recreation Program will begin soccer registration on Aug. 13.  The last day to sign up without a late fee will be Aug. 17; a $20 late fee will apply for all registrations received after the 17th.

Road Work

Due to the replacement of the box culvert on the West Chapman Road in Chapman, a detour is in place until approximately Aug. 22. Traffic will follow the detour signs around the project using the Grendell Road, with local traffic only on the West Chapman Road.
