Benefit concert raises about $3,000 for Toys for Tots

CARIBOU, Maine — The Northern Aroostook detachment of the Marine Corps League raised about $3,000 for its Toys for Tots program with a benefit concert on Nov. 11.

Country singer Georgette Jones performed at the Caribou Performing Arts Center on Saturday night, Nov. 10.

The daughter of Tammy Wynette and George Jones, GeorgetteJones also is an actress known for Sordid Lives, a 2008 television series

The Toys for Tots program was adopted in 1948 by the United States Marine Corps. With help from various public entertainment figures, such as Walt Disney, who created the iconic Toys for Tots train logo, the program took off and has thrived throughout the years, according to Rudy St. Peter, chairman of the local Toys for Tots program.

Each year, the program raises more than $280 million nationwide and provides more than 16 million toys for children at Christmas.
